Kinja'd!!!

Saw this dirty grimy 428i today. Was carrying its German Temp plates from its Euro Delivery on both ends. This guy might be dumber than some of the JDM “when it’s stanced it helps it drift” guys. But one advantage. Free toll across the Bay Bridge.

I wouldn’t call that “dumb.”

Kinja'd!!!2

Why would he be dumb? He’s likely either waiting for his Cali plates to come in or pulling a Steve Jobs...

It’s dumb how this person still has Germany temp plates on both ends. Usually, people put them up front. With the front, it allows you to acknowledge that this car was in Germany and it did carry said plates at one time or another. But it's past its prime. It doesn't look new. If there were current legit euro plates, I'd be suprised and wouldn't think of it as dumb.

It was probably recently picked up by the owner.

Cali plates come in within a month. Car definitely driven longer than 1. Pulling a Steve jobs requires no plates whatsoever

The plates expired 08/25/2015.

I think it looks sharp. Euro plates look much better than US plates, and these are legit from the euro delivery so they don’t have some dumb message like “hëygÜrl” on them.

And their plates would have arrived by the time the car arrived, as the german plates expired 8/25/15

Probably has just arrived from Europe. This might be part of the BMW European Delivery program.

Though, admittedly, the date of expiration is 25/08/2015, which would make it woefully late to still be in using these plates as primary registration...

But wait! You’re in Cali... These could count as dealer pieces of cardboard, in which he could drive around like this for SIX MONTHS!

*brain is confused*

*will stop*

I guess so. When SaveTheV8 starts producing Oppo Euro plates, I'll get one for the front

I live in VA, land of front plates :( so I can't do anything like that.

Dealer cardboard is useful shit. I had a relative who bought a used Camry with “BMW of ___” that thought DMV was going to send her new plates. That went on for a year. Someone on my swim team had a Merc ML for 2 years, and it had dealer cardboard the whole time. Never removed it.

Well, same in California. I just have to be really careful near cops or a ticket.

I might start risking going plateless up front. I’ve been running illegal tints (35% all around.. Not really that dark) in VA and have gotten no trouble, even when I got pulled over.

Oh yeah, and actual dealer plates are pretty easy to get. Explains a good fraction of cars at the local C&C have dealer plates.

I’m surprised that Germany doesn’t collect these back when the cars get loaded onto US-bound ships. Seems like they could be recycled.

Plenty of these temp plates still hanging around underneath the US plates on late-model Bimmers.

Germany already makes money on Euro Deliveries by the customers buying things, supporting the local economies.

I was simply thinking from an environmental and bureaucratic perspective. Government property expires, government should reappropriate it from its holder and dispose of it. Use materials to make new ones.

It’s dumb because its completely illegal to drive with those plates on in the United States. It doesn’t matter whether or not he was waiting for new plates, the Zoll plates can’t be used here.

Hmm...lemme try to deconstruct this.

Let’s assume that he used every day of his Euro Delivery insurance (unlikely, but possible), i.e. that he dropped the car off on August 25th to be shipped to the US. We also know that the shipping time for the West Coast is 8-10 weeks. So, August 25th + 10 weeks = the car arrived at its US dealership sometime around November 15th.

Let’s also assume he was able to pick up his car and do all the DMV paperwork that exact day (also unlikely, but possible). Factoring in the license plate lead time of up to one month that you mentioned, he can expect his plates to arrive no later than December 15th.

Today’s the 2nd, so I think he’s still good.

Edit: Just noticed he seems to have California temp registration in the correct spot on the bottom RH corner of his windshield! He probably prefers the look of Zoll plates to the plastic dealer ones his car would otherwise have on it right now...

Except people put valid Euro plates on their cars all the time, in conjunction with the US ones they eventually get...

Also, notice his car has California temp registration, attached in the legally-proper lower RH corner of the windshield. I don’t think he’s actually ‘using’ these plates – they’re just taking the place of “TOYOTA OF SAN WHATEVER” plate inserts that would otherwise be on his car right now.

The temp reg in CA is a joke. It's big piece of paper folded up so many times you only see the make, model, year, and the VIN.

Well I’ll be. I didn’t realize that California temp tags don’t even have to go where the rear license plate goes. That seems like a dangerous system. It would be very hard for LEO’s to identify a car without any plates. Here in MA, we don’t even have temporary tags. You have to either transfer plates form your old vehicle (if you have one) or immediately get new plates before you can start driving. Even in the states nearby that do issue temp tags, like New Hampshire for instance, the temp tag is a cardboard plate with a number that goes where the actual plate would normally go.

It’s one giant loophole. Basically, if your car looks like it was bought from a dealer recently such that the cops don’t pull you over and check (b/c they are onto all this), you can drive for months or years without actually buying insurance or paying for registration, etc! What happens if someone hits your car, though, I don’t know...

Here in BC (Canada), it’s pretty much like MA... Insurance agents come to dealerships and process vehicle registration and insurance on the spot (we have a government monopoly that handles both DMV matters and insurance). You can either get plates right there, or they can print out temporary ones w/ a serial of their own that you stick onto the front and rear windshields.

I find it amazing that a state which is so strict about other aspects of car ownership (mods, smog, etc.) would be so lax with plates etc. Seems ass backwards.
